Week 10 Reflection

What did you learn this week that struck you as particularly important in learning about virtual schools? Has your thinking changed as the result of what you learned this week?

Where do I start? Well, I was amazed with the data the meta-analysis from DOE/SRI study used. The use of data from 1996 got me thinking how effective is it to use data past even 6 months ago. I do believe those studies do carry some value in today's society but not enough to make a general statement or a right fit for today's virtual K-12 school settings. Also where do you draw the line of combining virtual class with blended classes or do each of these 2 need to be in each category of being analyzed? I rather think these studies should have have another layer of separation where comparison of virtual classes with f2f classes based on subject, teacher's experience, student's learning style, technology being used, and what is the main objective of the class.

I'm also intrigued by what are the main purposes from these meta-analysis studies? Is it merely to support the movement of supporting more online courses? Is it to provide a sense of encouragement for parents and students that virtual classes is the right thing for them? Or is it to please the organization or businesses that funded the research?
